According to the CWB's forecast, stating this weekend (July 31), Taiwan will be affected by the southeasterly air current and depression, resulting in torrential rains. Per the WRA's instructions, the 9th River Management Office convened a flood preparedness meeting this morning (30th) and a response team was formed by 1520 today (30th) to verify various flood preparedness measures and remain vigilant to prevent disasters from occurring.

The 9th River Management Office Director Hsieh Ming-Chan noted that the office has implemented the proprietary smart river surveillance platform to obtain the latest water and disaster-related information. Furthermore, rainfall stations at important flood prevention locations within the office's jurisdiction and near construction sites have been completed for an alert network. Disaster prevention information from rainfall stations, water level stations and CCTVs are consolidated to issue early warning push notifications, conduct real-time surveillance and offer assistance in decision-making, to realize smart disaster prevention.

Hsieh Ming-Chan commented that it is imperative to triple-check the readiness of various flood prevention measures. These include the inspection of flood preparedness of construction sites, inspection of watergate operations, fuel reserve for flood control pumps, flood prevention materials, surveillance system (CCTV, flood detector) signal confirmation, etc. Moreover, the Hualien County Government is reminded to monitor the preparedness of the pumping stations within its jurisdiction and their normal functioning.

The 9th River Management Office explained that in order to keep the waterways clear, the office collaborated with the county government to dredge the rivers and drainage outlets in advance during the flood season. In addition, the office also bolstered regional joint defenses with the Hualien Forest District Office and the Hualien Branch, Soil and Water Conservation Bureau upstream to prevent threats and losses caused by compounded earth and sand disasters.

The 9th River Management Office reminded the public that due to the rapidly changing weather during the flood season, the public should monitor weather information at all times and begin flood prevention preparations in advance to minimize disasters. People can also obtain the latest information from the WRA app, disaster prevention information network (httpfhy2.wra.gov.tw) and disaster and drought prevention Facebook fan page. The more you prepare, the less disaster damage you will suffer.
